During the inaugural Credit Data, Referencing & Innovation Symposium, Wilbrod Owor, Executive Director- Uganda Bankersโ Association (UBA) delivered a powerful reflection on the evolution of Ugandaโs credit information landscape. He commended the progress made since the early days of licensing credit reference bureaus and applauded CRBA for its strong partnership with the banking industry.
He reflected on how far Ugandaโs credit reference ecosystem has come, but noted a persistent gap: while the system hosts 33 million accounts, only about 4.3 million individuals and a small share of registered businesses access credit. True financial inclusion, he stressed, must focus on productive credit, not just account ownership.
He highlighted the need to strengthen the nationโs credit culture, improve repayment discipline, and design credit products that serve small-value borrowers, SMEs, and youth innovators who lack collateral but drive economic growth. Mr. Owor underscored that credit reference systems are custodians of trust, essential for fair pricing, responsible borrowing, and wider lending.
Mr. Oworโs message underscores a clear reality: Ugandaโs credit future depends on how well we harness data, strengthen repayment culture, and build collaborative, forward-looking systems that support all borrowers especially those with the potential to power our next phase of economic growth.
