Panel 5 at the CRBA Symposium highlighted how credit providers, fintechs, SACCOs, and associations are leveraging data to drive innovation, growth, and financial inclusion with trust at the center.

Moderated by Ms. Aisha Nakanwagi (NSSF Uganda), the discussion brought together CRB and industry leaders including Ms. Aida Kawuma of Uganda Bankersโ€™ Association (UBA), Ms. Jacqueline Mbabazi of Association of Microfinance Institutions of Uganda, Dr. Sylivester Ndiroramukama of Uganda Cooperative Saving and Credit Union (UCSCU), Dr. Theopista Ntale Sekitto of NSHUTI FINANCIAL CONSUMER ADVISORY CENTRE and Mr. Kenneth Kwesiga of ioTec Limited. Panelists underscored that reliable data, consumer protection, and collaboration are the foundation for a healthy credit ecosystem.

Key takeaways:
๐Ÿ”นTrust as the backbone: Borrower awareness, fair treatment by lenders, consistent reporting and digital capacity are essential to build confidence.
๐Ÿ”นTier 4 institutionsโ€™ potential: SACCOs, VSLAs, and MFIs benefit greatly from bureau reporting, yet participation remains limited. Incentives and targeted education can increase engagement.
๐Ÿ”นResponsible borrowing: Preventive measures, such as pre-lending counseling, reduce disputes and strengthen repayment behavior.
๐Ÿ”นData democratization: Safe, consent-based sharing of banking, telco, and merchant data enables better credit profiles while safeguarding privacy.
๐Ÿ”นCollaboration and awareness: Ongoing joint sensitization programs for institutions and rural communities are vital to strengthen understanding and uptake of credit reporting tools.

Strategic insights:
Strengthen borrower education, incentivize positive bureau behavior, expand tier 4 sensitization, promote safe data sharing, enhance consumer protection, invest in rural awareness, deepen association collaboration, explore new data sources, push for regulatory alignment, and build capacity for data-driven decision making.

The panel reinforced that trust, education, and collaboration combined with responsible data use are key to unlocking inclusive, sustainable access to finance for all Ugandans.
