FSDU Platform Economy Strategy Workshop

We were pleased to participate in a half-day workshop hosted by Financial Sector Deepening FSD Uganda on August 1, 2025, where they shared critical findings from the implementation of three pilot projects under their Platform Economy Strategy in the agricultural sector implemented by Ensibuuko, Emata, and Quest.

The key takeaways highlighted that human intermediation remains vital, with trusted community agents playing a key role in onboarding users and fostering trust. Despite efforts to digitise, cash still dominates due to limited access to digital IDs and wallets, while women’s participation remains low at just 20%, underlining the need for greater inclusivity. Digital payments are essential for building functional digital economies, but scaling these systems requires user-centric platforms, effective dispute resolution, and trust-building mechanisms.

A panel discussion explored what it would take to scale Uganda’s digital platform economy. The consensus: we need to build markets, improve payment systems, and ensure platforms are both practical and inclusive.

We thank Financial Sector Deepening Uganda (FSD Uganda) and BFA Global for an insightful presentation and meaningful engagement.
